The Orange Sunset at the Mirage

Marcus adjusted his fedora, pulling the brim low over his eyes. A ridiculous affectation, really—playing the part of a noir detective in a Miami resort—but it gave him a place to hide. For three days, he'd been watching her from behind the potted palms, nursing drinks that melted too fast in the humidity.

Elena sat by the pool, legs tucked beneath her on the chaise, that ridiculous orange bikini bright against her bronzed skin. She laughed at something the man beside her said—a captain of industry from Zurich, maybe, or perhaps just another mark. Marcus had stopped caring about names. What mattered was the way her hand lingered on the man's forearm, intimate and practiced.

They'd been partners for seven years. Built their boutique consultancy together from nothing. He'd proposed last month, and she'd said yes with tears in her eyes. Now he watched her pass spinach across her plate to the stranger—a thoughtful gesture, the kind she used to reserve for him when he'd had too much to drink.

The job had been simple: infiltrate the merger talks between Helios Tech and their competitor, gather intelligence, report back. But somewhere between the welcome reception and this afternoon by the pool, the lines had blurred. Marcus wasn't sure anymore if he was her handler or her husband, if she was playing the corporate spy or just playing him.

She glanced toward his hiding spot. Marcus's breath caught. Had she seen him? She'd always been observant—that's what made her brilliant at the job. But she turned back to her companion, smiling.

His phone buzzed. A message from headquarters: CONFIRM EXTRACTION. TONIGHT.

Marcus set the phone on the table. Across the pool, Elena slipped something into the Swiss man's pocket—keycard access to the Helitos server room. Their actual target. She wasn't cheating. She was working.

He'd been the spy all along, and he hadn't even known what game they were playing.
