The Orange Star's Secret
Lily was eight years old, and she loved climbing the old oak tree in her backyard. One summer evening, as the sky turned purple, she noticed something peculiar. Her orange cat, Mango, kept pawing at a strange black cable that hung from the telephone pole. The cable swayed gently, glowing faintly in the twilight.
"Mango, what are you doing?" Lily called, climbing down. But the cat only purred and tugged at the cable with her teeth. Curious, Lily pulled the cable gently. To her surprise, it began to sparkle like Christmas lights! One end dipped into a small puddle below—a pool of rainwater that shimmered with magical colors.
"Whoa!" Lily gasped as the pool of water started bubbling. An orange glow pulsed from beneath the surface. Slowly, a tiny orange star rose from the water, no bigger than a marble. It floated upward, trailing sparkles.
"Thank you for freeing me," whispered the star in a voice like wind chimes. "I fell from the sky and got trapped in your puddle. The cable helped me escape!"
Lily's eyes widened. "You're a real star?"
"I'm a wish-granting star," the orange star explained. "I got stuck when I tried to visit Earth. Now I can grant you one wish for helping me."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for toys, or candy, or endless summer. But then she looked at Mango, who was purring loudly. "I wish..." She paused. "I wish that every lost star could find a friend to help them home."
The orange star twinkled brighter than ever. "That's the kindest wish I've ever heard!" It shot up into the sky, trailing orange ribbons of light. "Your wish is granted!" it called back. "And thank you again for being such a good friend."
That night, Lily watched from her window as dozens of tiny orange stars danced across the sky, each one guided home by a new friend. Mango purred contentedly at her feet. Sometimes, she realized, the best magic doesn't come from wishes—it comes from kindness, curiosity, and unexpected friendships in the most surprising places.
