The Orange Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially the old orchard behind the house. One hot afternoon, while searching for the perfect orange to snack on, she noticed something peculiar near the back fence.

Between two ancient orange trees stood a stone statue she'd never seen before. It was a sphinx, but not like the ones in her books. This one had kind eyes and a friendly smile, and its stone mane seemed to shimmer in the sunlight.

"Hello there," Lily whispered, stepping closer.

To her surprise, the sphinx blinked!

"Hello, young friend," the sphinx rumbled softly. "I've been waiting for someone kind enough to find me."

Lily's eyes grew wide. "You're alive? But you're made of stone!"

"I'm magic," the sphinx explained. "And I guard something very special." She moved aside to reveal a small, crystal-clear pool that had been hidden behind her. "This is the Pool of Dreams. Anyone who looks into it sees their heart's true wish."

Lily peered into the water. At first, she saw her own reflection. Then the image changed. She saw herself surrounded by friends, all laughing and playing together in a beautiful garden filled with orange trees.

"That's my wish," Lily said softly. "I just moved here, and I haven't made any friends yet."

The sphinx nodded wisely. "Friendship, like the sweetest orange, takes time to grow. But you've already taken the first step by being brave enough to say hello to a stone lion."

Lily thought for a moment. "Will you be my friend?"

"I would be honored," the sphinx said warmly. "And I have a feeling you'll meet other friends soon. True friendship isn't about finding people who are exactly like you—it's about finding people who appreciate the magic in you."

That evening, Lily returned home with the perfect orange and a wonderful secret. She knew that tomorrow, she'd be brave enough to say hello to the new girl across the street. And every day after, she visited her sphinx friend, learning that the best magic of all is the kind that lives inside your heart.
