The Orange Sphinx's Secret
Lila loved exploring behind her grandmother's house, especially near the old willow tree where the grass grew tall and wild. One sunny afternoon, while running through the meadow, she spotted something peculiar — a tiny creature with the body of a cat and the wings of a butterfly, perched on a mossy stone.
"Hello there," Lila whispered, slowing to a stop.
The creature turned its head. It had the face of a wise little owl and sparkly orange eyes that glowed like sunset. "I am Zephyr, the Water Sphinx," it said in a voice like gentle wind chimes. "I guard the hidden stream that flows beneath this meadow."
Lila's eyes grew wide. "A hidden stream? Can I see it?"
Zephyr fluttered his wings. "Only if you can guess my riddle. But be warned — many children have tried, and all have run away when the answer proved too difficult."
"I won't run away," Lila promised, standing tall.
Zephyr nodded approvingly. "Very well. Listen closely: I have no mouth but always flow. I have no legs but always go. I give life to everything I touch, yet too much of me can be too much. What am I?"
Lila thought hard. She thought about the garden her grandmother watered every morning. She thought about the rain that made puddles for jumping. She thought about the tears she cried when she scraped her knee.
"Water!" she exclaimed. "The answer is water!"
Zephyr's orange eyes sparkled brighter than ever. "Correct!" He fluttered toward the willow tree and touched its trunk with his wing. The ground rumbled softly, and a beautiful spring bubbled up from nowhere, crystal clear and shimmering.
"This water grants courage to those who are kind," Zephyr explained. "You showed bravery by staying, and kindness by listening. Drink, and you will never face a challenge alone."
Lila cupped her hands and drank. The water tasted like sunshine and peppermint. She felt warm and strong inside.
"Thank you, Zephyr," she said. "Will I ever see you again?"
The Water Sphinx smiled mysteriously. "Whenever you need courage, just look for the orange butterfly near the water. Now go — your grandmother is calling you for supper!"
Lila waved goodbye and ran back across the meadow, her heart full of magic and her newfound courage glowing inside her like a tiny, eternal spring.
