The Orange Sphinx's Secret
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden. One sunny afternoon, while peeling a sweet orange, she noticed something peculiar behind the rosebush—a tiny golden statue of a sphinx, no bigger than her hand.
"That's strange," Lily whispered. She squeezed the orange peel, and a drop of juice landed on the statue.
Suddenly, the sphinx opened its emerald eyes! It stretched its miniature wings and spoke in a chime-like voice. "Thank you, young one. The magic of orange has awakened me. I am Zephyr, guardian of the Hidden Grove."
Lily gasped. "A talking sphinx!"
"I need your help," Zephyr said sadly. "My best friend, a gentle zombie named Benny, has fallen under a sleeping spell. Someone cast it because they feared his appearance, though Benny has the kindest heart."
"A zombie?" Lily's eyes widened. "Is he scary?"
"Not at all! Benny loves gardening and telling stories. But now he sleeps, and only someone pure of heart can break the spell."
Lily nodded bravely. "I'll help!"
"You must become a spy," Zephyr explained. "Find who cast the spell, and discover why. Only understanding can break it."
Lily crept through the garden, following glowing footsteps only she could see. They led to a weeping willow where a young boy sat alone, carving a wooden wand.
"Why did you put a spell on Benny?" Lily asked gently.
The boy looked up, startled. "I'm new to town. I saw Benny and thought he was a monster from stories. I was scared. I didn't mean to hurt anyone."
Lily smiled. "Benny isn't scary. He's Zephyr's best friend. Maybe you'd like to meet him?"
Together, they returned to the sphinx. The boy apologized and cast a counterspell. Benny woke up, stretching his green arms.
"I had the strangest dream," Benny murmured. "I dreamed I made a new friend."
The boy grinned. "It wasn't a dream."
"And now," Zephyr said, "you have three new friends."
Lily learned an important day: sometimes things that seem scary are just misunderstood, and kindness is braver than any spell.
From that day on, the garden was never quiet again. Four friends—Lily, Zephyr, Benny, and young wizard Oliver—shared orange slices under the roses, proving that the best magic of all is friendship.
