The Orange Sphinx's Secret

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house by the sea. Every morning, she would walk along the sandy beach, collecting seashells and watching the waves dance under the rising sun. But today was different. Today, she discovered something magical.

Hidden beneath a swaying palm tree, Lily found a tiny creature no bigger than her palm. It had the body of a kitten and wings like a butterfly, but its face was wise and ancient, like the statues she'd seen in books. The creature was the most beautiful orange color, glowing softly like a sunset.

"I am a sphinx," the creature said in a voice like twinkling bells. "And I have been waiting for you, Lily."

Lily's eyes grew wide. "A real sphinx? But you're so tiny! And so orange!"

"Magic comes in all sizes," the sphinx replied, stretching her orange wings. "I need your help. I've forgotten how to swim, and the mermaids are having a celebration tonight in the coral castle. They invited me, but I'm too afraid to go."

Lily thought about how she had been afraid to learn to swim last summer, but her grandmother had taught her that being brave doesn't mean not being scared—it means trying even when you are.

"I'll help you!" Lily said, taking the sphinx's tiny orange paw. "First, we need to get you used to the water."

All afternoon, Lily and the orange sphinx practiced in the shallow tide pools. The sphinx learned to float on her back (which looked like an orange leaf on the water), kick her wings like fins, and dive beneath the waves. At first, she was scared, but Lily held her hand and cheered her on.

"You're doing it!" Lily shouted as the sphinx swam her first lap across a deeper pool. "You're swimming!"

By sunset, the tiny sphinx was gliding through the water like an orange fish, her movements graceful and confident.

"Thank you, Lily," the sphinx said, giving her a sandy nuzzle. "You helped me be brave. Tonight, I will dance with the mermaids!" She pressed a tiny orange kiss onto Lily's palm. "If you ever need me, just look for an orange shell by the palm trees. I'll be there."

That night, as Lily lay in bed, she thought about her new friend. Sometimes helping someone else is the best way to discover your own courage. And somewhere under the moonlit waves, a tiny orange sphinx was swimming and dancing with mermaids, exactly as she had always dreamed.
