The Orange Sphinx's Secret
Lily loved exploring behind her grandmother's house, especially on hot summer days. Today, she followed the sound of trickling water deeper into the woods than she'd ever gone before.
Pushing through prickly blackberry bushes, Lily gasped. A crystal waterfall cascaded into a pool so blue it looked like liquid sapphire. And there, sitting on a mossy rock, was the most peculiar creature she'd ever seen.
It looked like a sphinx from storybooks, with the body of a lion and the head of a wise old woman. But instead of stone, this sphinx was made entirely of glowing orange crystals that caught the sunlight like a thousand tiny suns.
"Hello, young one," the sphinx spoke, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find this hidden water."
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"Magical creatures can do many things." The orange sphinx smiled. "My name is Amber. For a hundred years, I've guarded this waterfall, which flows from the Magic Mountain. But my sister sphinxes are trapped in stone, frozen by a greedy wizard who wanted our magic for himself."
"Can we help them?" Lily asked, her heart pounding with excitement.
Amber's orange form brightened. "Perhaps! In the center of this sacred pool lies the Golden Orange—the fruit that first gave us sphinxes our magic. Whoever retrieves it with pure intentions can break any enchantment."
Lily looked at the sparkling water. She'd always been a good swimmer.
"I'll try!" she said, kicking off her sandals.
The water was cool and refreshing. Lily dove deep, following the golden glow from below. Her fingers brushed something smooth and round—the legendary Golden Orange! As she grasped it, the entire pool lit up with orange light.
When Lily surfaced, Amber was already speaking ancient words. The orange light shot like an arrow toward distant mountains, then circled back. "Freedom flows!" Amber cried. "My sisters awaken!"
That night, Lily saw four new sphinxes flying across the moon—amber, emerald, ruby, and sapphire—free at last. And sometimes, when she visits her secret waterfall, a single orange crystal appears on her mossy rock.
A gift from a friend who taught her that the bravest magic of all is kindness.
