The Orange Sphinx's Secret
Lily loved spending her afternoons at the old museum, where dusty statues seemed to whisper secrets. One rainy Tuesday, she discovered something strange in the Egyptian exhibit—a tiny sphinx carved from bright orange stone, no bigger than her hand.
"You found me!" squeaked a voice.
Lily jumped. The sphinx was blinking its golden eyes at her!
"I'm Cleo," the little sphinx said, stretching her stone paws. "I've been sleeping for three thousand years. Thank you for waking me!"
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"Of course!" Cleo's whiskers twitched. "And you're just in time. My friends are waiting for us in the Secret Pyramid. It's the most magical place in the world—guarded by riddles, filled with treasures, and home to the best swimming pool in all of history!"
"Swimming?" Lily asked.
"The best swimming ever!" Cleo promised. "But first, you must solve my riddle: What has to be broken before you can use it?"
Lily thought hard. She remembered breakfast that morning. "An egg!"
"Correct!" Cleo did a happy spin. "Hold my paw!"
The museum walls melted away like watercolor paint. Suddenly, Lily and Cleo were standing before a magnificent pyramid that sparkled like stars had been sprinkled across its surface.
Inside, paintings of ancient children at play covered every wall. Lily saw them swimming in a crystal-blue pool, eating orange dates, and playing games older than time itself.
"This was the children's pyramid," Cleo explained softly. "Adults forgot it existed. But children never forget how to play."
They reached the pool—water that glowed with tiny lights like captured fireflies. Lily jumped in, splashing Cleo, who shimmered from orange to blue to green like a magical stone rainbow.
They played for hours, diving for shiny pebbles and racing through the water. Other spirit-children appeared, laughing and welcoming Lily into their games.
"Will you come back?" Cleo asked as the museum walls began to return.
"Every Tuesday," Lily promised, squeezing her new friend's tiny paw. "And I'll bring my little brother. He loves riddles—and swimming."
As Lily hurried home through the rain, her pocket felt warm where the tiny orange sphinx now lived, ready for their next adventure.
