The Orange Sphinx's Secret
Lila loved running through her grandfather's orange grove. The leaves whispered secrets as she sped past, and the sweet citrus scent made her feel like she was flying through sunshine. But today was different.
Behind the oldest tree, something sparkled. Lila stopped running and peeked around the trunk. There, curled up among the fallen oranges, was a tiny sphinx no bigger than her cat! Its wings shimmered like rainbows, and its eyes held the wisdom of a thousand years.
"You found me," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been sleeping here for a hundred years, waiting for someone with a curious heart."
Lila knelt down. "Who are you?"
"I'm Opal, guardian of the Moon Oranges," the sphinx said. "Once a year, these special oranges glow with moonlight magic. But someone has been stealing them!"
Lila's eyes widened. "I'll help! I can be your spy and catch them!"
That night, Lila hid behind the orange trees, watching and waiting. The moon rose high above the grove. Suddenly, she saw movement – a fox with glowing fur was sneaking toward the moonlit oranges!
But instead of stealing, the fox began gently gathering fallen oranges and hiding them in a hollow tree. Lila stepped forward quietly. The fox jumped.
"Please don't tell!" the fox cried. "My family is hungry, and these oranges are magic. They make my sick baby sister feel better."
Opal appeared beside Lila. "Magic oranges are meant to help those in need," she said kindly. "You may gather them, little fox."
The fox's tail wagged with joy. "Thank you! I'm Finn, by the way."
"I'm Lila," she said, smiling. "And from now on, we'll all be friends."
Every full moon after that, Lila, Opal, and Finn gathered the moon oranges together. And sometimes, just for fun, Lila would go running through the grove with her new friends, knowing that the best magic of all was friendship.
