The Orange Sphinx's Secret

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially the old palm tree that towered over all the others. Every afternoon, she'd sit beneath its fronds with her dog Barnaby, a golden retriever with ears that flopped when he ran. They were best friends, always ready for adventure.

One sunny afternoon, as Lily pealed an orange she'd picked from the grove, something magical happened. The palm tree began to shimmer, and its bark twisted into the shape of a face. But not just any face — it was a sphinx! Though smaller than the ones in her storybooks, this sphinx had kind eyes and a gentle smile.

"Hello, young friend," the sphinx rumbled softly. "I've been waiting for someone kind enough to share.

"Lily's eyes grew wide. She immediately offered half her orange. The sphinx accepted it gratefully.

"For years, children have taken from this garden without giving back," the sphinx explained. "But you offered friendship first. That's the greatest magic of all."

Barnaby wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. The sphinx laughed, and the sound was like wind through the palm fronds.

"I have a gift for you," said the sphinx. She pressed her paw to the ground, and a tiny orange sapling appeared. "Plant this with care. When you share its fruit with others, it will never run out. But remember — the magic only works with a generous heart."

Lily planted the sapling right away. She watered it every day and always thought of the sphinx's lesson. Years later, that small tree fed her entire village, and Lily never forgot the most important lesson: true friendship isn't about what you receive, but what you're willing to give.

And sometimes, if you listen closely beneath the palm trees, you can still hear the sphinx's gentle laughter, reminding everyone that kindness is the greatest magic of all.
