The Orange Sphinx's Secret

Lily loved exploring the woods behind her house. One sunny afternoon, she followed a sparkling trail to a hidden clearing she had never seen before. In the middle stood a small pond with the clearest water she had ever seen.

Sitting beside the pond was not a frog or a turtle, but a tiny sphinx no bigger than a kitten. It had the body of a lion and the head of a wise old owl, with wings folded neatly at its sides.

The sphinx's fur was the color of a ripe orange, glowing softly in the dappled sunlight.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone kind enough to find me."

Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"

The sphinx nodded. "My name is Clementine. I am the guardian of this magic pond. For a hundred years, I have sat alone, protecting its secrets."

Lily sat beside her. "What secrets?"

Clementine's amber eyes twinkled. "This water grants one wish to those who are pure of heart. But I must give them a riddle first."

"A riddle?" Lily's favorite subject at school was riddles.

Clementine smiled. "Here is my riddle: I have no feet, but I always run. I have no mouth, but I roar. I have no bed, but I rest. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at the orange leaves falling around them. She watched the water ripple in the breeze.

"A river!" she exclaimed. "Rivers run but have no feet. They roar but have no mouth. They rest in the ocean but have no bed!"

Clementine clapped her tiny paws together. "Correct! You may make one wish."

Lily thought carefully. She could wish for toys or candy. But looking at Clementine's lonely face, she knew what she truly wanted.

"I wish for you to have a friend," Lily said. "Someone to sit with you by this beautiful pond."

The water began to glow. A shimmering light rose from the pond and took shape beside Clementine – another tiny sphinx, this one as blue as a summer sky.

"Thank you," Clementine whispered, tears of joy in her eyes. "You have given me the greatest gift."

Lily waved goodbye and ran home, her heart full. She had discovered magic, solved a riddle, and made two new friends – all in one afternoon. And every day after, she visited Clementine and Azure, bringing them stories and laughter.

Sometimes, she thought, the best wishes are the ones we make for others.
