The Orange Sphinx's Riddle
Lily loved her grandfather's old shop, where dust motes danced in slanted sunlight and secrets hid on every shelf. One rainy afternoon, she discovered something extraordinary tucked behind a row of dusty books—a velvet hat that shimmered like captured twilight.
"Try it on," whispered her stuffed bear Barnaby, who had suddenly started speaking when Lily's fingers brushed the hat's brim.
Lily placed the hat on her head. WHOOSH! The shop dissolved into swirling colors. When they stopped spinning, Lily and Barnaby stood in a desert where the sand sparkled like tiny jewels.
Before them rose a magnificent sphinx with the body of a lion and the face of someone kind and ancient. But instead of being gold or stone, this sphinx was the color of a perfect orange, from nose to tail tip.
"Welcome, young traveler," the Orange Sphinx rumbled gently. "I have waited centuries for someone brave enough to wear the Hat of True Seeing. But to pass, you must answer my riddle."
Lily's heart beat fast, but she nodded bravely. Barnaby squeezed her paw.
"I have hands but cannot clap," the sphinx said. "I have a face but cannot smile. I tell stories without speaking. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at her watch, then at the sphinx, then at Barnaby. Suddenly, she knew!
"A clock!" Lily exclaimed.
The Orange Sphinx smiled, and its orange fur glowed brighter than the sun. "Correct! Your heart is pure and your mind is sharp."
With a gentle wave of the sphinx's paw, a magnificent door appeared in the sand. Inside lay a room filled with hats of every kind—tall hats, small hats, silly hats, smart hats. The sphinx explained, "These hats give adventures to those who are kind, brave, and true. You may take one."
Lily chose a simple blue cap. When she put it on, she saw that the real magic wasn't in hats or adventures—it was in the kindness and courage she already had inside.
"Remember," the Orange Sphinx whispered as Lily and Barnaby spun back to the shop, "the greatest adventures are the ones that help others."
Lily tucked the hat away, knowing she'd had the most magical day of her life—and that kindness was the most powerful magic of all.
