The Orange Sphinx's Gift

Max was a curious boy who loved exploring. One warm summer evening, while playing in his backyard, he noticed something strange near the old swimming pool. A small stone sphinx sat on the edge, no bigger than his lunchbox. But this sphinx was special – its stone skin shimmered with orange sparkles, like tiny pieces of sunset trapped in rock.

The sphinx opened one emerald eye. "I've been waiting for someone with a pure heart," it said in a voice like rustling leaves.

Max's dog, Buster, a golden retriever with floppy ears, bounded over and started barking happily at the tiny statue.

"Quiet, Buster," Max whispered, amazed. "You can talk?"

"All sphinxes can talk," the orange creature said. "But most choose not to. People rarely listen anyway." It stretched its stone paws. "I'm here because something magical happens in this pool every summer solstice – and tonight's the night."

Max's heart raced with excitement. Fireflies danced around them as the sphinx explained. "When the moon rises highest, the pool becomes a Pool of Wishes. But beware – it only grants wishes that help others."

Just then, the pool water began to glow softly, like liquid moonlight. An orange sphere floated to the surface, pulsing with gentle warmth.

"Make your wish, child," the sphinx whispered.

Max thought hard. He could wish for anything – unlimited toys, superpowers, endless ice cream. But then he remembered his grandpa, who had been sick in the hospital for weeks.

"I wish for my grandpa to get better," Max said sincerely.

The orange sphere flared brighter, then dissolved into the water. A small orange gemstone appeared in Max's hand – warm and comforting.

"Your wish will come true," the sphinx promised. "But remember this: true magic isn't about making things appear. It's about love and kindness. You already have that inside you."

The next morning, Max's parents called with wonderful news – Grandpa was going to be just fine. Max clutched the orange gem, smiling at his lesson: the best wishes are the ones we make for others.

The sphinx was gone, but sometimes, when Max visits the pool on summer evenings, he still sees orange sparkles dancing in the water, reminding him that kindness is the greatest magic of all.
