The Orange Sphinx of Sunset Beach

Lily loved collecting treasures at Sunset Beach. Shells, sea glass, smooth stones—each one sparkled in her pocket like a little piece of magic.

One evening, as the sky turned the color of apricots and mangoes, Lily found something extraordinary. Behind a piece of driftwood, a tiny creature sat watching her. It looked like a miniature lion with wings, its scales gleaming like fresh orange peel.

"I've been waiting for you," said the creature. Its voice sounded like wind through seashells.

"You're a sphinx!" Lily gasped. "But you're so small!"

"Size matters less than heart," the orange sphinx replied. "My name is Zola. I guard the sunset, but tonight my wings are tired. Can you help me reach that tall rock before the sun disappears?"

Lily nodded. She cupped Zola gently in her hands. The sphinx was warm, like holding a piece of sunshine.

Climbing the rock wasn't easy. The path was steep, and the wind tried to push Lily back. But Zola whispered encouraging words, and Lily's determination grew stronger with every step.

"Almost there!" Zola cheered as they reached the top.

The sphinx fluttered her wings, and suddenly, orange light burst across the sky—brighter and more beautiful than any sunset Lily had ever seen. The colors danced: tangerine, coral, amber, gold.

"Thank you, Lily," Zola said, touching her nose to Lily's forehead. A warm glow spread through her chest. "Tonight, you were my hero. And now, you will always carry a piece of sunset magic in your heart."

"Will I see you again?" Lily asked.

"Whenever the sky turns orange," Zola promised, "I'll be there. A true friend never really leaves."

Lily ran home with her pocket full of treasures and her heart full of magic. Some friendships are big, she learned, and some are small. But the best ones fill your life with colors you never imagined possible.
