The Orange Soda Incident
Maya's freshman year at Northwood High had been, in her estimation, a complete flop. That changed the night of Jake's party—the one everyone would talk about for weeks.
She arrived wearing her favorite orange soda-stained hoodie, practically vibrating with nerves. Jordan found her immediately, grabbing her arm. 'You look like you're about to bear bad news.'
'Maybe I am,' Maya shot back, though they both knew her 'threats' were about as dangerous as a fluffy bunny.
The real drama started in the kitchen. Senior Chelsea had built a literal pyramid of red Solo cups on the counter—thirty cups tall, wobbling dangerously. 'Nobody touch this,' she declared. 'It's art.'
Naturally, that's when it happened. Someone knocked into Maya, she stumbled forward, and her orange soda crashed into Chelsea's masterpiece. Cups cascaded everywhere, splashing sticky liquid across the linoleum.
The room went silent.
Chelsea's face flushed. 'You ruined it.'
'The cups are fine, just—'
'No. You don't get it.' Chelsea's voice cracked. 'That took me twenty minutes.'
Maya expected laughter. Instead, Jordan stepped in. 'Actually, that was kind of impressive physics. The way they fell?' He turned to Maya. 'Dude, you basically created a water slide effect. It was chaos, but it was cool chaos.'
Someone snorted. Then Chelsea herself cracked a smile. 'Fine. It was kind of dramatic.'
By the end of the night, Maya was sitting on the back porch with Jordan and Chelsea, watching someone's attempt to recreate the cup pyramid fail spectacularly. 'I'm sorry about your art,' Maya said.
'Whatever,' Chelsea shrugged. 'Honestly? You breaking it made it more memorable. Nobody would've talked about my stupid cup tower otherwise.' She held up her phone. 'But I'm definitely posting this.'
Maya realized something as she walked home under the streetlights: sometimes the disasters, the moments you want to disappear into the ground—they're exactly what make people remember you. And maybe that wasn't so bad after all.
