The Orange Soda Incident

Maya's stomach did backflips as she stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her orange soda like a lifeline. The summer party was in full swing—music thumping, people laughing, everyone seemingly confident except her.

"You okay?" Liam asked, sliding up beside her. He was wearing those ridiculous dog-patterned swim trunks he'd bought as a joke, but somehow he made them look adorable.

"Just vibing," Maya lied, taking a sip to hide her flushed face. She'd been crushing on him since seventh grade, and tonight she'd promised herself she'd finally make a move.

Suddenly, Mrs. Henderson's cat, a judgmental calico named Mochi, darted onto the pool deck, chasing a fluttering moth. Chaos erupted. Someone screamed, a drink went flying, and in the chaos, Maya's orange soda splashed everywhere—mostly onto Liam's dog trunks.

"My bad!" she cringed, wishing she could dissolve into the concrete.

But Liam just laughed, shaking orange droplets from his hair. "Honestly? This is the most interesting thing that's happened all night." He grinned at her, and something shifted between them. The awkwardness melted away, replaced by something warmer.

"Wash it off in the pool?" she suggested, surprising herself with her own boldness.

"Race you," he said, already sprinting toward the water.

Maya jumped in after him, surfacing to find him grinning. The cat sat on a lounge chair, looking smug. And for the first time all summer, Maya felt like she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
