The Orange Slice Spies
Lily loved pretending to be a spy. She wore her dad's old hat and carried a magnifying glass everywhere. Today she was on her most important mission yet: discovering what lived in the babbling brook behind her house.
The water sparkled like diamonds in the afternoon sun. Lily crouched on the mossy bank and peered into the crystal-clear stream. Tiny fish darted between smooth stones, and water spiders skated across the surface as if they were dancing on ice.
"What are you hiding?" she whispered, leaning closer.
Suddenly, a brilliant orange butterfly fluttered past. Lily reached into her pocket and pulled out something orange and round—a slice of the tangerine she'd saved for later. Without thinking, she dropped it into the water.
Splash!
The tangerine slice didn't sink. Instead, it glowed with a soft orange light. Then, to Lily's amazement, tiny creatures with wings like dragonflies and bodies like little oranges popped out from beneath the slice.
"We've been waiting for you, Spy Girl," said the smallest creature, hovering right in front of her nose. His voice sounded like bubbles.
"You can see me?" Lily gasped.
"We see everything in this water," he replied with a grin. "We're the Orange Slice Spies, and we need your help."
The creatures explained that a grumpy beaver had built a dam that was stopping the water from reaching their friends downstream—flowers that were beginning to wilt without their daily drink.
Lily knew exactly what to do. She followed the Orange Slice Spies as they zipped and zoomed over the water, guiding her to the beaver's dam. Working together, Lily and her new magical friends dug a small channel around the dam. The water rushed through like laughter, flowing freely once more.
That evening, Lily sat by the brook, eating the rest of her tangerine. She wasn't pretending anymore. She really was a spy—a secret friend to the magical creatures who lived in the water, protector of flowers, and keeper of the sweetest secret in the world.
She smiled and dropped another orange slice into the sparkling water. It was time for another adventure.
