The Orange Pyramid Scheme
The ball hit the padel court with a sharp crack, echoing through the glass-walled club. Elena watched Marcos return her serve, his shirt already damp with sweat. They played every Tuesday at seven—the same ritual, the same court, the same carefully choreographed dance of conversation between points.
"Your form's improving," she said, stepping forward to receive.
"Taking those vitamins finally paying off." He grinned, but something in his eyes didn't match the smile. Elena knew those vitamins—Pyramid Wellness, his company's flagship product. She also knew they were garbage. Her employer, a rival supplement giant, had paid her handsomely to prove it.
Three months of corporate espionage, and Elena had everything she needed: documents proving Pyramid's formulas were ineffective, their clinical trials fabricated, their entire business built on nothing but marketing genius and placebo effect. She'd played the part perfectly—the lonely divorcée at the padel club, the woman who listened too well over drinks afterward, the spy who made him feel seen.
"You're quiet today," Marcos said, wiping his forehead.
"Tired." She forced a laugh. "Work stuff."
"That pyramid scheme of yours?" The joke landed differently today. Because it *was* a pyramid scheme. And tomorrow, she'd destroy it—and him.
They walked to their cars afterward under parking lot lights. The air smelled like rain coming. He reached into his pocket, pulled out something small and orange. A clementine.
"My daughter left these in my car." He placed it in her palm. "She said you look like you need more sunshine."
Elena stared at the fruit. Real. Simple. Everything she wasn't.
"Marcos—"
"I know what you do." His voice stayed steady. "Or who you do it for. I've known since week two."
"Then why—"
"Because you're the first person who's ever made me feel like something real might be possible." His shoulders dropped. "So do what you need to do. But I wanted you to know: I knew."
The orange sat heavy in her hand. Tomorrow, she'd send the files. Tomorrow, Pyramid Wellness would collapse. But tonight, Elena peeled the clementine with shaking fingers and tasted something like truth.
