The Orange Pyramid Incident
Maya's hair was supposed to be subtle auburn highlights. Instead, she came out of the bathroom looking like a traffic cone.
"It's... bold," her best friend Riya said, wincing.
"Bold" was code for "you look like a carrot exploded on your head." Maya's first high school house party was in three hours, and she now had pumpkin-colored hair.
The party was at Tyler's house — you know, Tyler, whose older brother could buy alcohol. The social pyramid was on full display: varsity jackets at the top, band kids middle, everyone else trying to look like they belonged somewhere.
Maya grabbed a solo cup from the pyramid of red plastic cups on the kitchen counter. She didn't drink — her mom would literally kill her — but holding a cup made you invisible.
"Nice hair," said Carter, the fox-eyed soccer captain who'd been two grades ahead of her since middle school. His eyes darted around the room, never settling on anything for long.
"Thanks," Maya said, deciding to commit to the bit. "Going for the 'I did it myself because I'm brave' vibe."
"Working." He actually smiled. "Hey, you seen that cat outside? Been staring at us through the sliding door for like twenty minutes. Creepy but also kind of iconic."
They found themselves sitting on the back porch, watching the orange tabby cat sit absolutely still on the lawn like it was waiting for something.
"Social hierarchies are weird," Maya said, feeling suddenly bold. "Like, why do we all pretend we care who sits where during lunch?"
"Yo, facts." Carter laughed. "I'm supposed to be cool, but I'm literally just anxious 24/7."
The cat yawned, stretched, and walked away like it owned everything.
"Legend," Carter said.
Maya touched her orange hair. "You think people will think I'm trying too hard?"
"Nah." He bumped her shoulder. "You're just the first person brave enough to show up looking like a traffic cone. That's power moves."
Later that night, Maya caught her reflection in the bathroom mirror and actually smiled. The orange hair wasn't a mistake — it was a plot twist. Sometimes the things you think will ruin you end up being exactly what makes you memorable.
The cat was still outside when she left, sitting in that same spot. Maya gave it a little nod. Respekt.
She walked home feeling lighter, her orange hair glowing under the streetlights. The pyramid could wait. She was busy becoming the main character.
