The Orange Pyramid by the Pool
Arthur sat on his favorite bench beside the swimming pool, watching eight-year-old Leo paddle courageously across the shallow end. The afternoon sun painted everything in gold—the water, the concrete, even the old orange pyramid of pool floats stacked in the corner, a family tradition spanning three generations.
"You're doing fine, Leo! Just like your mother did," Arthur called, his voice carrying the warmth of seventy-eight years. He remembered teaching his daughter Susan in this same pool, back when his hair was dark and his knees didn't ache with the morning rain. She'd been terrified of the water, just as Leo was now.
The orange pyramid had been Susan's invention. One summer afternoon, she'd stacked the inflatable rings and noodles into a wobbling tower, declaring it her "Pool Pyramid." Somehow, it had become sacred—rebuild each season, paint refreshed when necessary, always orange because that was Susan's favorite color. Now Leo's generation added their own layers, new floats atop old ones, each ring a memory.
Arthur's wife Eleanor used to swim laps here every morning until the cancer took her five years ago. He could still see her cutting through the water, strong and graceful, orange swim cap bright against the blue. Some days, he half-expected to see her surface, shaking water from her gray hair like a silver seal.
"Grandpa, watch!" Leo shouted, standing chest-deep. "I'm doing it!"
"You sure are," Arthur replied, pride swelling in his chest. "Just like your grandma. She was the best swimmer I ever knew."
The boy doggy-paddled to the ladder, beaming. Arthur helped him onto the deck, wrapping a fluffy orange towel around those shivering shoulders. They sat together watching the sunlight dance on ripples, building moments that would someday be memories.
"Grandpa, why is the pyramid orange?" Leo asked suddenly.
Arthur smiled, thinking of Eleanor, of Susan, of all the love this old pool had witnessed. "Because orange is the color of warmth, Leo. Of sunsets and summer mornings. Of beginnings and endings, all wrapped together."
Leo seemed satisfied with this wisdom, leaning against Arthur's shoulder. Together they watched the light fade, the pyramid of orange floats standing sentinel beside the water—monument to a legacy of love, floating quietly through time.
