The Orange Pyramid
Maria stood before her bathroom mirror at 2 AM, running trembling fingers through her graying hair. The iPhone on the counter lit up with another encrypted message from the agency: *Package confirmed. Move tonight.*
She'd spent three years embedding herself in Christo's inner circle. Three years of smiling over cocktails, of feigning interest in his talk of paradigm-shifting wellness technologies, of becoming the trusted confidante who could facilitate his "consulting" arrangements with government officials. The agency had recruited her from corporate security — she knew how to spot a grift, and Christo's operation was nothing more than a sophisticated pyramid scheme dressed up in biotech buzzwords.
Tonight would end it.
The gala was Christo's signature event — hundreds of investors, celebrities seeking the next detox trend, politicians hunting for donations. Maria arrived fashionably late in a borrowed gown, champagne flute in hand. She spotted Christo immediately, holding court near a tower of carefully arranged oranges — his signature prop, symbol of "purity" and "natural energy."
*Sweet irony,* she thought. *Oranges contain D-limonene. Perfect solvent for extracting evidence.*
She navigated the crowd, collecting encrypted files on burner phones tucked in her clutch. Christo's proprietary algorithm wasn't revolutionary AI — it was a simple pattern-matching script dressed in thousands of lines of obfuscation. The "personalized wellness plans" were randomized templates. The whole enterprise was built on nothing but buzzwords and victim-blaming.
Maria's phone buzzed. A message from her handler: *Exfil in 5. Stay close to the oranges.*
She drifted toward the centerpiece as Christo approached, his eyes narrowing slightly.
"Maria, darling. You seem distracted."
"Just admiring your citrus collection," she said, forcing a smile. "It really ties the room together."
His hand grazed her elbow. "We should discuss your continued involvement. The board has questions about the Zurich allocation."
*He knows.*
Maria's heart hammered against her ribs. She leaned closer, as if sharing an intimate confidence.
"Actually, Christo, I was hoping to show you something. Private."
She gestured toward the balcony. His expression shifted — calculation, curiosity, hunger.
They stepped into the cool night air. Maria's hand found the device in her clutch — not a weapon, but a transmitter.
"What is it you wanted to show me?" Christo asked, his voice low.
"The future," she said, as agency agents emerged from the shadows.
He didn't even have time to reach for his phone.
Later, as Maria watched Christo being escorted away in handcuffs, her handler approached.
"Good work, Maria. Three years, and it's done."
She gazed at the orange moon rising over the city, fingers twisting a strand of silver hair.
"Is it?" she whispered. "Is it ever really done?"
Her phone remained silent. The agency would have another assignment soon. But tonight, she allowed herself this moment — watching the pyramid collapse, one brick at a time.
