The Orange Pyramid

Emma had been swimming laps for forty-five minutes when her phone buzzed on the pool deck. The corporate retreat was supposed to be about team building, but instead she'd spent the weekend avoiding Marcus, the VP who'd propositioned her three months ago in the elevator.

She pulled herself from the water, grabbing the orange towel she'd left on the lounge chair. The color reminded her of the dossier she'd found on his desk last week—orange tabbed, marked "PYRAMID INITIATIVE." She'd thought it was just another corporate rebranding until she'd seen her name listed under "assets to be liquidated."

"You're missing the padel tournament," Sarah called from the court, laughing as she smashed a ball past their CEO. Sarah didn't know. None of them did. They thought Emma's distant behavior was about the failed project, not that she'd discovered she was being phased out.

Emma wrapped herself in the towel, heart pounding. She'd already forwarded the evidence to a journalist at the Post. She was the spy now, she supposed—turning corporate espionage into survival. The pyramid scheme wasn't just financial; it was structural, built on the bones of employees they'd systematically eliminate.

"Emma!" Marcus waved from the clubhouse, smiling like he hadn't signed her death warrant. "We need you for mixed doubles."

She walked toward him, water dripping from her hair, and wondered if he knew she'd already torpedoed his pyramid scheme. The orange file had burned in her fireplace last night, but its contents lived on in cloud storage she'd never be able to fully delete.

"Coming," she called back, sliding into the role of dutiful employee one last time. In three days, the article would drop. In a week, the pyramid would collapse. Tonight, she would swim until her arms burned, pretending she couldn't feel the walls closing in.
