The Orange Pumpkin Friend
Lily loved Halloween more than anything. Every year, she carved pumpkins with her grandpa, but this year was different. Grandpa was away, and Lily felt lonely.
Her golden retriever, Barnaby, nudged her hand with his wet nose. He always knew when she was sad.
"Let's go on an adventure," Lily whispered, grabbing her basket. They walked to the pumpkin patch behind their house as the sun painted the sky orange.
Suddenly, Barnaby started barking at something strange. A lumpy figure was stumbling between the rows of pumpkins. It looked like a zombie!
Lily's heart pounded, but she remembered Grandpa's words: "Sometimes scary things just need a friend."
She stepped closer. The zombie wasn't scary at all—it was made entirely of orange pumpkins stacked together! Its head was a giant jack-o-lantern with a crooked smile, and its body was three medium pumpkins. Tiny green vines stuck out like arms.
"Are you lost?" Lily asked gently.
The pumpkin creature nodded slowly. With a soft clunk, it held out a hand made of vines. In its palm sat a single orange seed.
Lily understood. The pumpkin zombie was lonely and wanted to grow a friend.
"I know just what to do," she said. Together with Barnaby, she dug a small hole and planted the seed carefully. The pumpkin zombie did a happy wobble.
Every day that fall, Lily and Barnaby visited their patch. They watered the seed and told it stories. Slowly, a tiny green sprout appeared, then a vine, then small yellow flowers.
By Thanksgiving, a bright orange pumpkin had grown. It wasn't as big as the zombie pumpkin, but it was perfect.
Lily carved it into a smiling face. Now the pumpkin zombie had a friend too.
"Sometimes," Lily told Barnaby as they curled up by the fire, "the things that seem scariest are just the ones that need love the most."
Barnaby thumped his tail in agreement. Outside, two pumpkin friends glowed in the moonlight, together at last.
