The Orange Pearl's Secret

Lily loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd dive into the cool blue lake behind her house, pretending she was a mermaid exploring an underwater kingdom.

One sunny afternoon, while swimming near the old dock, Lily spotted something glowing beneath the water. She dove deeper, her fingers trailing through the silky water, and found an orange pearl the size of a marble. It pulsed with warmth like a tiny sun.

"What are you?" she whispered, surfacing with a splash.

The pearl vibrated in her hand, then projected a shimmering image into the air—a beautiful mermaid with flowing turquoise hair and the same orange eyes as the pearl.

"I'm Coral," the image spoke like wind chimes. "That's my heart-stone, and I've been looking for it everywhere! I dropped it while swimming away from the Shadow Fish."

Lily's eyes widened. "A Shadow Fish?"

"A lonely creature who forgets things," Coral explained. "He steals treasures because he wants friends, but doesn't know how to ask. Can you help me?"

Lily's dad had dropped his iPhone in the lake last week. Maybe the Shadow Fish had taken it! "I think I know where your treasures are."

Hand in hand with the glowing image, Lily swam to the deepest part of the lake. There, nestled among swaying seaweed, sat a glittering pile of lost things—watches, coins, rings, and yes, her dad's orange-cased iPhone.

The Shadow Fish emerged, shy and translucent. "I just wanted someone to visit," he bubbled sadly.

Lily smiled. "You don't need to steal things to make friends. You just have to ask."

That day, Lily returned everything—including her dad's phone—and made two new friends. Every summer since, she goes swimming with Coral and the Shadow Fish (who's actually quite nice once you know him), and they all share orange slices together on the old dock.

Because the best magic isn't found in treasures or things. The best magic is friendship, freely given.
