The Orange Mustang

The bleachers smelled like sunscreen and stale popcorn, that specific Friday night baseball scent that meant everything and nothing at the same time. Maya sat three rows up, her orange Mustang cap pulled low, watching Jason's gaze drift toward the cheerleaders for the fiftieth time.

"You're staring again," she muttered, twisting a strand of blue hair around her finger. The dye job had been her rebellion last week—a way to be someone else, someone braver.

Jason shrugged, all lanky limbs and awkward grace. "Whatever. Not like it matters."

It did matter. They both knew it did. When Tyler—the bull of sophomore year, all broad shoulders and zero impulse control—started making jokes about Maya's new hair from the dugout, Jason pretended not to hear.

The baseball sailed through the air. Strike three. Game over.

"Are you gonna say anything?" Maya asked, her voice tight.

"About what?" Jason studied his sneakers. "Can't just bear down and fight every time someone opens their mouth."

Maya stood up, her orange hat catching the floodlights. "That's not what courage is. It's about showing up for who matters." She walked away, leaving him with his cowardice and the fading roar of the crowd.

Three days later, she found him waiting by her locker. No cap this time—just messy hair and something like resolve in his eyes. "I told Tyler to shut up about the hair thing," he said, too fast. "And the baseball team. They're backing off."

Maya smiled slowly. "Took you long enough."

"Yeah, well." A faint grin. "I'm slow sometimes. But I get there."

The orange Mustang cap sat on her head, but for the first time, she felt like she was the one wearing it—not hiding behind it.
