The Orange Moon's Gift
Lily loved running through the magical forest behind her grandmother's house. Every day after school, she'd race past the ancient trees, her sneakers crunching on fallen leaves. But today was different.
An orange glow peeked through the branches. Lily slowed, her heart fluttering like a trapped butterfly. There, in a clearing she'd never noticed before, stood a palm tree unlike any she'd seen in books. Its trunk shimmered with silver light, and its leaves whispered secrets in the breeze.
"Hello, little one," the tree seemed to hum.
Lily approached slowly, extending her palm. In it appeared a tiny orange fruit, glowing from within like a miniature sun. Warmth spread through her fingers, up her arm, straight to her heart.
"This is the Moon's gift," a soft voice spoke. "Once every generation, when a child's heart is pure and full of wonder, the orange moon chooses someone to carry its light."
The orange pulsed brighter. Images filled Lily's mind – children laughing, flowers blooming, stars dancing. She understood. This wasn't just fruit. It was pure joy, condensed into something small enough to hold.
"What do I do?" Lily asked, her voice trembling with excitement.
"Share it," the tree whispered. "The light grows when given."
Lily thought of her grandmother, whose arthritis made mornings hard. She thought of Timmy, the new boy at school who ate lunch alone. She thought of Mrs. Chen, whose cat had gone missing.
Running home felt like floating. The orange glow painted everything beautiful – ordinary houses became castles, sad faces softened. She found her grandmother first, pressing the light against her arthritic hands. Golden warmth flowed, and for the first time in years, her grandmother's fingers moved freely.
Next, she found Timmy. The orange's glow made him smile, really smile, for the first time. By sunset, she'd shared light with everyone who needed it.
The orange was gone, but something remained – a warm, golden feeling in Lily's palm that never faded. She'd learned that the best magic isn't kept. It's given away.
Now, every night when the orange moon rises, Lily touches her palm and remembers: the brightest light is the one you share.
