The Orange Moon Gift

foxfriendorangebear

Felix the fox had never seen anything like it. An orange glowing in the middle of the forest! His tail twitched with excitement as he crept closer.

"Wait!" a deep voice rumbled. Felix scrambled backward as a massive bear emerged from behind a pine tree. "I found it first."

Felix's ears drooped. The orange was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen – like a tiny piece of moon fallen to earth. "But tonight's the night my grandmother tells stories about star fruits. She said if we find one, we can make wishes come true."

The bear sat down with a thump. "My name is Barnaby," he said softly. "And my wish is for someone to share my honey with. I have so much, but I eat alone every night."

Felix's eyes widened. "I wish for someone to help me reach the sweet berries at the top of the old oak tree. I'm too small to climb that high."

Barnaby's nose wiggled. "I can reach those berries easily. And I have honey that tastes wonderful with them."

"And I know the perfect spots for napping in the sun," Felix offered, his tail starting to wag again. "And I can tell you all the best stories I've learned from my grandmother."

Barnaby nudged the glowing orange toward Felix. "You make the wish."

Felix closed his eyes tight. "I wish for a friend who likes berries, honey, naps, and stories."

The orange pulsed with light, then split into two perfect pieces – one for each of them. It tasted like sunshine and magic and the start of something wonderful.

"That's the best wish I've ever heard," Barnaby said, licking orange juice from his claws. "Friends, Felix?"

"Friends," Felix agreed, and that night under the stars, a fox and a bear shared their first meal together – honey, berries, and the most magical orange in the world.
