The Orange Lightning Surprise
Lily and Max loved playing padel in Dr. Meadow's backyard every Saturday. Dr. Meadow was kind, though sometimes she moved slowly and seemed half-asleep. The children called her their 'garden zombie' — but only in the nicest way possible, like when your cat wakes up grumpy from a long nap.
One afternoon, the sky turned an odd orange color. Strange lightning crackled — not the usual blue-white bolts, but orange lightning that zipped and zoomed like playful fireflies.
'Magic lightning!' gasped Lily.
Suddenly, a glowing orange bolt struck Dr. Meadow's prize pumpkin patch. Where the pumpkin had been, now stood a small creature with pumpkin-orange skin and leafy green hair that stood straight up, as if shocked by static.
The creature blinked and smiled. 'Hello! I was dreaming for so long... thank you for waking me!'
Lily and Max stepped closer cautiously. 'You're... not scary?'
'Scary?' The creature laughed, sounding like wind through autumn leaves. 'I'm a Pumpkin Friend! I sleep underground all winter to guard the garden secrets. The orange lightning woke me early!'
Dr. Meadow emerged from her cottage, moving faster than the children had ever seen. She smiled at the creature. 'At last! My ancestor's magic worked — the lightning of friendship brings the guardian to life!'
The Pumpkin Friend used its leafy hair to create beautiful orange flowers that bloomed instantly. 'I can help the garden grow even stronger now! And I have so many stories from sleeping under the earth...'
Lily and Max learned that day that things aren't always what they seem. The 'zombie' gardener was actually a guardian of ancient magic. The strange orange lightning was a gift of friendship. And sometimes, the most wonderful surprises come when you least expect them.
Every Saturday after that, the children played padel with their new friend, whose orange hair glowed whenever they scored. And the garden? It bloomed more beautifully than anyone in town had ever seen.
