The Orange Lightning Storm
Luna loved storms. When the sky turned dark and rumbled with thunder, she would press her nose against the window glass, watching the rain dance on the other side.
Her dog, Barnaby, a fluffy golden retriever with one floppy ear, would sit beside her. Barnaby didn't like storms at all. He would hide under Luna's bed, shaking, until she coaxed him out with gentle pets and soft words.
One evening, something strange happened. Instead of regular white lightning, orange lightning streaked across the sky like glowing tangerine paint.
"Look, Barnaby!" Luna whispered. "It's magic lightning!"
To her surprise, Barnaby's tail wagged. He nudged her hand with his wet nose, then trotted toward the back door, barking excitedly.
"You want to go OUT there?" Luna asked. But Barnaby insisted, scratching at the door with his paw.
Luna opened the door, and together they stepped into the backyard. The orange lightning flashed again, and suddenly, the old scarecrow in Luna's garden began to move!
The scarecrow stumbled toward them, stiff and awkward. Luna gasped—then she realized it wasn't scary at all. It was just lonely.
"Hello," the scarecrow said in a rusty voice. "I've been stuck in that garden for fifty years. The orange lightning brought me to life, but I'm still all stuffed with straw and loneliness."
"You look like a zombie," Luna said kindly, "but I bet you're actually nice."
"I AM nice!" the scarecrow said. "I just need a friend."
Barnaby trotted over and licked the scarecrow's hand. The scarecrow's painted smile seemed to grow a little bit wider.
"Will you play with us?" Luna asked.
That night, under the magical orange lightning, Luna, Barnaby, and their new friend played tag in the rain. They learned that scary-looking things aren't always scary, and that everyone needs friends—even stuffed-cloth zombie scarecrows brought to life by magic storms.
When morning came, the scarecrow was back in the garden, frozen still. But now he had a red ribbon around his neck, and Barnaby slept curled beside him, dreaming of orange lightning and new friends.
