The Orange Lightning Pool

Lily loved summer evenings. She loved how the sky turned purple and pink, and how fireflies danced in her backyard. But most of all, she loved the old swimming pool behind her house.

It wasn't a regular pool. Her grandmother said it was magical. Lily didn't believe her—until one warm Tuesday evening when the storm came.

The sky grew dark. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy. Lily peeked out the window and saw something amazing. Lightning bolts weren't white or yellow. They were bright orange, like the juiciest tangerine she'd ever seen.

Orange lightning streaked across the sky and dipped right into her pool.

Lily ran outside in her bare feet. The rain hadn't started yet, but the air felt sparkly, like someone had opened a box of glitter.

The pool began to glow. The water turned the same brilliant orange as the lightning. Tiny lights swirled like orange fireflies having a pool party.

Mesmerized, Lily dipped her toe in. A tingle rushed up her leg—not scary, but exciting, like the feeling before opening a birthday present. Without thinking, she jumped right in.

She could breathe underwater! The water felt warm and cozy, like a hug from her grandmother.

A small fish with rainbow scales swam up to her. "You found us!" the fish said, his voice sounding like bubble wrap popping. "The orange lightning opens our portal for just one hour."

Lily's eyes widened. "Who are you?"

"I'm Finn, and this is my best friend, Oona." He gestured to a smiling purple dolphin.

Oona offered her fin. "Want to go exploring?"

Together they swam through coral caves and met friendly sea turtles. Finn taught Lily to sing bubble songs. Oona showed her secret grottos where shell pianos played magical tunes.

But too soon, the orange light began to fade.

"Our portal is closing," Oona said sadly. "But remember—magic is real. You just have to believe."

Lily climbed out of the pool as the first raindrops fell. The orange lightning was gone. But in her hand, a tiny orange scale shimmered.

Her grandmother found her sitting by the pool, grinning.

"The pool showed you its secret, didn't it?" Her grandmother winked.

Lily clutched the magic scale tight. She had made new friends and discovered something incredible. Grown-ups might say it was just her imagination playing tricks while swimming in the pool during a storm. But Lily knew better.

Every summer evening after that, she waited by the pool, hoping to see the orange lightning again.

Because the best magic always comes when you least expect it.
