The Orange Lightning Fish
Lily loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd leap into the cool blue lake behind her house, pretending she was a mermaid exploring underwater kingdoms.
One warm evening, as orange streaks painted the sunset sky, Lily noticed something peculiar. A tiny orange fish was following her as she swam. But this wasn't like any fish she'd seen before—its scales glowed like small pieces of the sun, and it left tiny trails of light wherever it went.
"Hello there!" Lily called out, surfacing with a splash.
The fish zipped toward her, moving faster than any fish should. When it broke the surface, something amazing happened. A tiny bolt of lightning crackled from its fins!
"I'm Spark!" said a small, squeaky voice.
Lily blinked. "You can talk?"
"Only during orange sunsets!" Spark explained. "I'm a Lightning Fish. Would you like to see my world?"
Before Lily could answer, she felt herself lifting into the air. She wasn't afraid—she was swimming through the sky! Clouds became floating islands. Stars twinkled like friendly eyes. And there, swimming beside her, were dozens of Lightning Fish, each a different shade of orange, gold, and yellow.
"This is where we live when storms come," Spark said. "We gather lightning to keep the world bright."
Lily watched as the fish performed a beautiful dance, weaving lightning into the shapes of animals, trees, and mountains. It was the most magical thing she'd ever seen.
"We need your help," Spark said suddenly. "A big storm is coming, and we need more swimmers to help us catch the lightning bolts. The world needs our light."
Lily's heart swelled with pride. Together, she and the Lightning Fish spent the whole night swimming through the storm, gathering lightning bolts and turning them into gentle sparks that would become fireflies, stars, and the glow in children's nightlights.
When morning came, Lily was back in her lake, tired but incredibly happy.
"Thank you," Spark whispered, appearing one last time. "Remember—magic is everywhere, especially when you're swimming toward adventure."
From that day on, every time Lily went swimming, she looked for orange ripples in the water. And sometimes, just sometimes, she'd see a tiny flash of lightning, reminding her that the best adventures come from making friends in the most unexpected places.
