The Orange Letter

orangerunningfriend

Maya found the letter in her mailbox, bright orange against the dull gray of winter Wednesday. It was from Elena—her former best friend, the woman she'd spent three years running from.

Inside, Elena's handwriting was familiar: 'I'm getting married. I need you to know before you see it on social media.'

Maya stood in her kitchen, the orange envelope crinkling in her hand. Their friendship had ended over a shared apartment, a betraying confidence, and a man who'd turned out to be worth neither of them. Maya had moved to Seattle. Elena stayed in Chicago. They hadn't spoken since.

But the orange envelope demanded attention. It was Elena's favorite color—the color of their college track jerseys, the sunset they'd watched from their first apartment balcony, the safety vest Elena wore working construction.

Maya thought about how she'd been running from the memory of their friendship for years. Every failed romance, every short-term lease, every job she'd quit after six months—all of it just another way to keep moving, keep escaping.

She poured a glass of wine, orange-tinted in the evening light, and sat with her phone. Elena's number was still saved, listed simply as: HER.

The call rang five times.

'Hello?' Elena's voice was cautious.

'I got your letter,' Maya said. 'The orange one.'

Silence stretched between them, heavy with three years of unsaid things.

'I didn't know if you'd come,' Elena finally said.

'I'm running to you this time,' Maya said, surprising herself. 'Not away.'

Elena laughed, and Maya realized she'd missed that sound more than anything.

'The wedding's in June,' Elena said. 'There's an open seat.'

'Orange envelope?' Maya asked.

'Orange envelope,' Elena confirmed.

Maya hung up feeling something shift in her chest, something that had been stuck for three years. She tucked the orange letter into her jewelry box, next to her mother's pearls. Some things deserved to be kept close.
