The Orange Leaf's Ocean Sky

orangefriendswimming

Once there was a little orange leaf named Pip, who clung tightly to his branch in the Great Maple Tree. All summer long, Pip watched his brother and sister leaves dance in the wind, but he was afraid. What if he fell? What if the wind carried him away from everything he knew?

One afternoon, as autumn painted the world in golden light, a small blue butterfly landed beside Pip. "You look lonely," she said.

Pip sighed. "I'm not lonely. I'm just... holding on tight."

"I'm Luna," the butterfly said, her wings shimmering like tiny jewels. "Want to see something magical?"

Before Pip could answer, a gentle breeze swept through the branches. Pip's stem snapped! He tumbled downward, his orange body spinning through the air.

"Don't be scared!" Luna called, fluttering beside him. "You're not falling. You're swimming!"

Swimming? Pip gasped as he caught an updraft. Suddenly, he was gliding upward instead of down, floating through currents of air that felt just like water. The sky wasn't empty space at all — it was an enormous, shimmering ocean of blue!

Luna showed Pip how to catch the warm air currents, how to spiral through clouds that tasted like cotton candy, how to swoop down low to touch the morning dew on grass before soaring upward again.

"You're my best friend," Pip said, twirling happily around Luna. "I was so afraid to let go, but this is wonderful!"

"Sometimes," Luna said, "the things we're most afraid of become our greatest adventures. You just need a friend to show you the way."

They swam through the sky ocean for hours, until Pip grew tired and drifted gently to the ground, landing softly in a bed of his orange and red companions.

"Will I see you again?" Pip asked as Luna prepared to fly south for winter.

"Every autumn," she promised. "Look for the blue butterfly, and we'll go swimming together again."

Pip smiled, settling into his winter bed. He wasn't afraid anymore. Some friends, he learned, stay in your heart forever, and come autumn, he would be swimming through the sky ocean once more.
