The Orange Incident
Kai's goldfish, Finneas McGold, stared at him from his bowl with what Kai swore was judgment. Those unblinking eyes had witnessed everything — the failed haircut, the disastrous attempt at cool — and now they'd witness this.
"Bro, you sure about this?" Marcus asked, eyeing the box of orange hair dye like it was about to explode.
"It's called 'Sunset Blaze,'" Kai corrected, though his hands were shaking a little. "And yeah. Totally sure. It's time for a glow-up."
The orange hair dye disaster was immediate and spectacular. Instead of Sunset Blaze, Kai ended up with what Marcus generously described as "traffic cone on fire." They had forty-five minutes before Jordan's pool party — the party of the year, the one everyone would be talking about on Monday, the one where Kai had finally planned to talk to Maya.
"We can fix this," Marcus said, though his voice cracked.
They couldn't.
At Jordan's house, the backyard was transformed. Twinkle lights, music bumping, and — Kai's heart sank — an actual swimming pool complete with floating lanterns and, in the corner, a decorative pond with huge goldfish that probably had more social confidence than Kai did right now.
Maya was already there, looking perfect in a swimsuit that somehow made everything look effortless. She waved. Kai waved back, his bright orange hair somehow glowing under the lights.
Then Jordan's little sister pointed. "Why is his hair the same color as our goldfish?"
Everyone looked. The goldfish swam lazily in their pond, their scales catching the light, undeniably orange. Kai's hair caught the light too. The comparison was not lost on anyone.
Someone giggled. Then someone else. Kai felt his face burning.
But then Maya was there, slipping into the water. "Hey Fish Boy," she called, splashing water his way. "You swimming or what?"
She didn't make fun of his hair. She just... invited him in.
Kai jumped in, orange hair and all. The water was perfect. The goldfish swam in their pond, indifferent. And Maya — Maya actually thought his hair was "kind of iconic, actually."
"Sunset Blaze," Kai said, treading water beside her.
"No," she said, grinning. "Traffic cone on fire. But I'm into it."
And somehow, that was exactly what Kai needed to hear.
