The Orange Incident
Maya's hair wasn't supposed to be orange. It was supposed to be 'sunset copper,' according to the box, but the bathroom mirror at 11 PM revealed a different reality. She looked like a traffic cone with split ends.
"Mom's gonna kill you," her best friend Chloe had predicted over FaceTime, then immediately added, "but lowkey, kinda iconic?"
Now Monday morning in the cafeteria, Maya was hyper-aware of every single person noticing her hair. She wasn't running from the attention—that would be cowardly—but she was strategically navigating it. Head down, hood up (school rule violation, but desperate times), make a beeline for their usual table.
"Spinach smoothie?" Chloe pushed a cloudy green jar across the table. "My mom's new wellness phase. It's actually not terrible, if you don't think about the texture."
Maya peered at it suspiciously. "Does it taste like salad in a cup?"
"Only if you linger on the aftertaste. Quick sip, you're golden."
Behind them, Ethan—Maya's crush since September—laughed at something his friends said. She felt that familiar stomach drop, the one that had nothing to do with suspicious green beverages. How was she supposed to talk to him now, looking like a highlighter gone wrong?
"Just own it," Chloe said, following her gaze. "The hair, I mean. It's giving main character energy."
"It's giving 'I made questionable decisions at midnight.'"
"Same thing, honestly." Chloe grinned. "Anyway, I have a plan. We tell everyone it's intentional. Like, deliberate statement piece. Anti-conformity. Very artsy."
Maya snorted, then actually considered it. Because here's the thing about being fifteen: sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the ones that define you. Not the hair—she'd fix that eventually. But the not hiding. The sitting in the cafeteria with traffic cone hair and a spinach smoothie, letting people stare, letting them think whatever they wanted.
She took a sip of Chloe's smoothie. It did taste like salad in a cup.
"Okay," Maya said, pushing her hood back. "Let's do this."
Chloe raised her own green jar like a toast. "To questionable decisions and looking iconic while making them."
And maybe—just maybe—Maya caught Ethan glancing their way, actually smiling. Not laughing at. Smiling like he might want to talk to the girl with orange hair and the courage to sit there anyway.
Sometimes the worst disasters turn out to be exactly what you needed.
