The Orange Hat Secret

Maya stood by the edge of the pool clutching her orange soda like it was a lifeline. The can was sweating in the July heat, just like she was. She'd been nursing it for forty-five minutes, using it as an excuse not to talk to anyone.

Around her, Jake's summer party raged on. People cannonballed into the water, their laughter ricocheting off the wooden fence. The pool water sparkled with that perfect blue that only existed in Instagram posts and rich people's backyards.

Maya pulled her baseball cap lower. The hat was her security blanket, her "I'm not really here" signal. If she couldn't see them, they couldn't see her. Right?

"Hey, Maya!" Jake called, dripping wet. "You gonna stand there all day or what?"

"Just chilling," she mumbled, taking a tiny sip of flat orange soda.

His friend Noah—cute, confident Noah—swam over. "Come on. The water's perfect."

Before Maya could protest, Jake's cousin Lily appeared behind her and gave her a shove. "Oops!"

Maya hit the water with an ungraceful splash. Her hat floated away like a defeated orange leaf. She surfaced sputtering, her carefully curled hair plastered to her forehead, her makeup probably running down her face. The worst possible scenario.

But then something happened. Noah laughed, but it wasn't mean. He extended a hand. "Finally. You've been hovering on the edge all night."

She took his hand. "I was just... waiting for the right moment."

"Well," he said, grinning, "this is it. Welcome to the party."

The water wasn't scary anymore. The hat was gone, but she didn't need it. Someone tossed her an orange floatie, and she actually laughed—really laughed—for the first time all summer.

Sometimes the worst moments are just the beginning of the best ones.
