The Orange Hat's Secret

I sat in the corner of the cafeteria, desperately trying to disappear. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead like an angry hornet, and I could feel the spinach from my lunch wedged between my front teeth. Perfect. Just perfect.

Across the room, Jordan sat with their friends, wearing that bright orange beanie I'd been crushing on for weeks. The one with the tiny sphinx patch on the side. A sphinx, for crying out loud. Who wears mythological creatures on their hat and still looks cool? Jordan, apparently.

"Hey, aren't you gonna eat that?" My best friend Riley nudged my arm, nodding at my untouched spinach salad.

"Not hungry," I mumbled, even though my stomach was growling loud enough to wake the dead.

The truth was, I'd been starving myself all week, trying to fit into these stupid skinny jeans that were supposedly "in" now. Because apparently being a teenager meant constantly reshaping yourself to match whatever trend TikTok decided was cool that week.

Jordan caught my eye from across the cafeteria and smiled. I immediately looked down, pretending to be fascinated by my spinach. My face burned hotter than a thousand suns.

"They're totally looking at you," Riley whispered. "You should go talk to them."

"Yeah, right. With spinach in my teeth? I'd rather die."

Riley rolled their eyes so hard I thought they might get stuck. "You're being dramatic. Jordan probably thinks it's cute or whatever."

"Nothing about spinach in your teeth is cute, Riley. Nothing."

The next day, I decided to take a different approach. I wore my dad's old orange hat – the one he'd given me before he moved out, the one that smelled like cedar and old memories. I figured if Jordan could wear an orange sphinx hat, I could wear an orange hat too.

I walked into English class, heart pounding, and there was Jordan, sitting at the desk next to mine. Their sphinx hat was missing today, replaced by messy hair that looked intentionally tousled.

"Nice hat," Jordan said, grinning.

I froze. "Thanks?"

"Seriously. My mom has one just like it. From the 90s." Jordan's eyes sparkled with amusement. "It's honestly iconic."

"Oh. Yeah. My dad gave it to me."

"That's actually really sweet." Jordan paused. "Hey, are you coming to the game on Friday? Everyone's going."

"I... maybe? I'm not really into sports."

"Neither am I." Jordan laughed. "I just go for the drama. You know, when the team loses and everyone pretends like it's the end of the world? It's better than Netflix."

I found myself laughing too. "That's actually... really accurate."

"So you'll come?" Jordan asked, leaning closer. "I promise there's no spinach involved. Unless that's your thing."

My face burned again, but this time it felt different. Warmer, somehow. "Definitely no spinach. But yeah, I'll be there."

That Friday, I showed up to the game wearing my orange hat and my most comfortable jeans – not the skinny ones. Jordan was waiting by the entrance, wearing their sphinx beanie again.

"You came!" Jordan's face lit up. "And I see you brought the iconic hat."

"Wouldn't miss it," I said, and for the first time in forever, I actually meant it.

As we walked into the gym together, I realized something: all that time I'd spent trying to disappear, trying to reshape myself into something I wasn't, all I'd really needed was someone who got the joke – spinach, sphinxes, orange hats and all.
