The Orange Hat Friday

Marcus stood in front of Jordan's bathroom mirror, adjusting the neon orange snapback for the thirtieth time. It was ridiculous. He was ridiculous.

"You're not actually gonna wear that, are you?" Jordan called from the bedroom. "You look like a construction cone that learned to vape."

Marcus flipped the brim backward. "It's called a statement, Jordan. Look it up."

"Yeah, the statement's 'I'm trying way too hard.'" Jordan appeared in the doorway, already dressed, looking effortlessly perfect. Because that was Jordan's superpower - making everything look easy while Marcus's brain constantly served up anxiety on a silver platter. Tonight was Sophia's house party, the first one of freshman year where actual popular people would be present. Marcus's stomach had been doing gymnastics since Tuesday.

The orange hat was his armor. Stupid, bright, impossible-to-ignore armor.

"Whatever," Marcus said, but his voice cracked. "Let's just go."

The party was already in full swing when they arrived. Too many bodies, too much bass vibrating in his chest, the thick scent of cheap body spray and something sweet. Marcus hovered near the snacks, gripping a solo cup like it was a lifeline.

Then he saw her. Riley. The girl from his English class who always drew band logos on her arms. She was wearing this oversized cardigan that looked like it had survived three decades of thrift stores, and she was standing alone by the back door, petting a cat that had definitely wandered in from somewhere.

"That's her," Jordan said, following his gaze. "Your little crush. Go talk to her."

"I can't just -" Marcus started.

"Bro, you're literally wearing a neon orange hat. You've already committed to the bit. Commit to this too."

Marcus's heart hammered. He walked over, and the cat - some calico thing with more attitude than everyone here combined - glared at him like he was personally responsible for its problems.

"Nice cat," Marcus said, and wow, his voice actually worked.

"His name is Bull," Riley said, grinning crookedly. "Because he's tiny but acts like he could destroy everyone in this room."

Bull the cat chose that moment to yowl and bolt, knocking over a bowl of Doritos in the process. Orange dust everywhere. Riley laughed, and it was this real, unselfconscious sound that made Marcus's chest feel weird and swollen.

"I'm Marcus," he said. "I like your cardigan."

"I'm Riley." She looked at his hat. "And I like your... courage?" Her grin widened. "No, seriously. It's bold. I dig it."

They talked for an hour while the party swirled around them. About music, about how high school was basically a nightmare factory, about how neither of them really understood why everyone was trying so hard to be cool. Marcus forgot about the hat. Forgot about being nervous. Forgot to check if Jordan was watching.

When Jordan finally found them, Marcus's face hurt from smiling.

"We're leaving, my dude," Jordan said, tapping Marcus's shoulder. "And you're coming with me. You too, Riley. Some of us are going to the diner for pancakes."

Riley looked at Marcus, and he saw something real in her eyes. Something that said this wasn't just party talk.

"Yeah," Marcus said. "I'm in."

He adjusted his orange hat, but he wasn't hiding anymore. He was just being the kind of person who wore ridiculous things and talked to cute girls about sarcastic cats and actually, finally, felt like he was exactly where he was supposed to be.
