The Orange Hat at the Bottom of the Pool

Elena had been swimming laps for forty-five minutes when she saw it: an orange hat resting at the bottom of the hotel pool, brilliant against the blue tiles like some terrible sunken flower.

She surfaced, gasping, and saw him sitting on a deck chair—Daniel, her boss, the man she'd been sleeping with for six months in hotel rooms just like this one. He was holding a plastic cup of complimentary hotel champagne, watching her with that infuriating calm he brought to everything, including the dismantling of their department.

"You forgot this," he said, and to her horror, he reached into his bag and produced her other hat—the sensible gray one she'd actually packed. "Left it in the conference room."

Elena pulled herself from the pool, water streaming down her body like all the things she couldn't say. The orange one at the bottom wasn't hers. It was younger, brighter—something a college girl would wear. Someone who didn't know better than to sleep with her boss, or to believe him when he said his marriage was already over, or to think that some promotions came without a price.

"The restructuring announcement is tomorrow," Daniel said, not meeting her eyes. "Just wanted you to hear it from me first."

He stood, placed her gray hat on the chair beside her towel. Like a benediction. Like a goodbye.

Elena looked back at the pool. The orange hat was still down there, caught in the filter's gentle current, swimming nowhere.

"I know," she said.

She dove back into the water, lungs burning with something like courage, something like the end of everything she'd pretended to want.
