The Orange-Haired Bull of Papaya Grove

Esther sat on her porch swing, watching seven-year-old Maya carefully arrange the papaya halves on the plate. The sweet, tropical scent wafted up, carrying her back sixty years to her father's farm in what they used to call the orange grove—though they grew papayas, not oranges.

"Your great-grandpa was stubborn as a bull," Esther said, smiling at the memory. Jacob Morrison had been a bull of a man, broad-shouldered and immovable when he set his mind to something. But his hair—that magnificent, bright orange hair that the sun seemed to ignite every morning—that was what everyone remembered first.

Maya looked up, her own brown curls falling into her eyes. "Was it really orange?"

"Orange as a sunset," Esther nodded. "And when he worked in the fields all day, that hair would catch fire from the sun. Your grandmother used to say she fell in love with his hair before she ever noticed his bull-headed persistence."

She remembered how her father had planted the first papaya tree on a whim, everyone said it wouldn't grow in their climate. But bull-headed Jacob had nurtured that tree through three harsh winters, covering it with blankets, building windbreaks, talking to it as if it were a stubborn child needing encouragement.

"That papaya tree became our legacy," Esther continued. "Your great-grandpa taught me that some things worth growing don't happen overnight. You have to be bull-headed about the things that matter—family, faith, keeping something alive even when everyone says it won't take."

Maya bit into the papaya, juice dripping down her chin. "Grandma Esther, will you teach me how to grow papayas?"

Esther felt her own white hair shifting in the breeze. She'd planted her own papaya trees when she and Harold bought their first home. Now, at seventy-eight, she still harvested fruit from those same trees, bull-headed in her own quiet way.

"Yes, child," Esther said, taking Maya's sticky hand. "But first, let me tell you how your great-grandpa's orange hair turned completely white the day you were born—said he'd traded his fire for wisdom."
