The Orange Hair Rebellion
I looked like a **zombie**. No, seriously—week three of sophomore year had me stumbling through the hallways with dark circles under my eyes that could rival any apocalypse survivor. My usual brown **hair** was currently a disaster of **orange** DIY dye that had gone wrong in spectacular fashion.
"You look like you haven't slept since finals week," Marcus whispered, sliding into the seat next to me in homeroom.
"Rough night," I muttered, which was true—staying up until 3 AM studying for AP Euro while simultaneously refreshing Instagram every five minutes will do that to you. "Also, I may have accidentally used too much bleach."
The orange catastrophe was supposed to be a statement. A rebellion against my mom's "natural beauty only" rules. Instead, I looked like a traffic cone that had been through a washing machine.
Then everything went sideways at lunch. My friends had somehow appointed me as the designated cafeteria **spy**, tasked with figuring out whether Chloe was spreading rumors about Maya's breakup. I was crouched behind a pillar, dramatically trying to look inconspicuous, when disaster struck.
I got a massive piece of **spinach** wedged right between my front teeth while grinning like an idiot at Jake.
Jake from AP Euro. Jake whose smile made my stomach do gymnastics. Jake who was currently looking directly at the green monstrosity in my teeth.
I felt the heat rise up my neck. Somehow this moment captured everything about being sixteen—trying to reinvent yourself, taking ridiculous risks, and ending up with salad in your teeth while the person you like watches it all go down.
But then Jake did something unexpected. He grinned back, revealing his own spinach situation.
"We look like we just came from a salad wrestling match," he said, and instead of dying, I laughed. Real laughed, not the fake polite laugh I'd been using all year.
The orange hair was still a disaster. I was still exhausted. But somehow, having someone else in the same embarrassing boat made everything less catastrophic. Maybe being a zombie with orange hair and salad in your teeth wasn't the worst thing in the world. Maybe it was just part of figuring out who you actually were underneath all the awkward.
