The Orange Hair Incident
Maya's hands trembled as she held the box. **Orange** Sunset Blast. The most ridiculous hair color she'd ever seen, which was exactly why she bought it. Her mom would freak. Her friends would definitely have opinions. But Maya needed something—anything—to feel less invisible in sophomore year.
"You're actually doing this?" Leo asked from where he sprawled on her bed, messing with his phone. The **cable** from his charger snaked across her comforter like a lazy snake.
"Shut up and help me," Maya said, squeezing the dye into her palms. Her **hair** absorbed the vibrant orange instantly, turning her bathroom into a crime scene.
Three hours later, she looked like a radioactive traffic cone. Leo's silence was worse than laughter.
"It's... bold," he finally managed.
Monday morning at school was a masterclass in walking with confidence while internally screaming. Maya kept her chin up, orange waves blazing like a warning flare. First period: everyone stared. Second period: someone whispered "mermaid" behind her back. Third period: disaster struck.
She was laughing at Tyler's joke in AP Bio when Jessica leaned toward her, fake-concerned. "Maya, you've got..." She gestured to her own teeth.
**Spinach**. From lunch. Obviously.
The entire table went silent. Maya's face burned hotter than her hair. She'd survived orange hair only to be taken down by salad.
"That's **bull**, Jessica," Taylor said from across the table, not looking up from her phone. "She literally doesn't. You're just trying to make her feel weird about the hair."
Jessica froze. Maya's eyes met Taylor's—a tiny, grateful nod passed between them.
"Whatever," Jessica muttered, suddenly fascinated by her textbook.
By Friday, the orange didn't feel so scary anymore. Taylor sat with her at lunch. People actually remembered her name. And Maya realized visibility wasn't about being perfect—it was about being brave enough to be seen, spinach and all.
Maybe orange was her color after all.
