The Orange Hair Fiasco
Maya's hair was supposed to be auburn. A rich, sophisticated shade that screamed "I'm not the same girl who tripped in gym last week." Instead, she was staring at her reflection in horror. It was orange. Like, really orange. Traffic cone, Cheetos, I-am-literally-glowing orange.
"It'll fade," her best friend Dakota assured her, though she was clearly fighting back laughter. "Besides, it's giving main character energy."
Maya had exactly three days before the baseball championship—where she'd finally be working up the nerve to talk to Alex, the cute pitcher who'd started sitting at her lunch table. This hair was NOT giving main character energy. It was giving "I made a terrible mistake at 2 AM" energy.
By Friday, Maya was rocking a beanie indoors and praying nobody noticed the orange tendrils escaping. She'd strategically avoided Alex all week. But fate, being the petty jerk it is, had other plans.
At the game, Maya found herself squished between Dakota and a tub of questionable nachos. Naturally, that's when Alex appeared, looking unfairly good in his uniform.
"Hey," he said, sliding into the seat beside her. "I haven't seen you all week."
Maya's brain short-circuited. "I've been... busy. With stuff."
"Cool, cool." He gestured at her beanie. "You cold?"
She'd rather die than explain the situation. "It's my thing now. Fashion statement."
But the universe wasn't done embarrassing her yet. As she took a bite of her own spinach-loaded nacho (because apparently her life was a series of questionable choices), a chunk of green spinach decided to lodge itself directly in her front teeth.
Alex was still talking. "So, I was wondering if—" He paused, looking concerned. "You have a little..."
Maya's soul left her body. She wiped frantically at her teeth while somehow managing to knock her nachos onto her lap. Orange hair. Spinach teeth. Nacho disaster. This was it. Her social life was officially over.
But Alex just started laughing. Not mean laughter. The genuine kind, where his eyes crinkled.
"You know," he said, "you're the only person who could make orange hair and spinach teeth look cute."
Maya froze. "You can see my hair?"
"The beanie isn't exactly hiding it." He grinned, nodding at the escaped orange strands. "I like it. It's... memorable."
"Memorable," Maya repeated. "That's one word for it."
"I was going to say brave." He bumped her shoulder lightly. "Most people at our school wouldn't dare be that different."
Maya looked at him—really looked at him. Maybe this wasn't the disaster she'd thought. Sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. Sometimes orange hair and spinach-filled awkwardness is just how you find out someone likes you for you, embarrassing moments and all.
"Want some nachos?" she asked, pushing the tub toward him. "Fair warning—they're messy."
Alex took one without hesitation. "I think I can handle it."
