The Orange Guardian's Secret
Lily loved her backyard pool more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd swim until her fingers turned wrinkly. But this summer felt different. The pool had a secret.
One afternoon, Lily noticed something strange at the bottom of the pool. Something orange and glowing. She dove deeper, her heart racing with excitement. There, resting on the pool's floor, was an orange-colored creature with big friendly eyes.
It wasn't scary at all. In fact, it looked kind of sad.
Lily surfaced, gasping for air. The creature floated up too, staying close to the surface. That's when she noticed the old iPhone clutched in its webby hand.
"You're not a zombie, are you?" Lily asked gently. "You're a guardian!"
The orange creature nodded, using the iPhone to type a message. The screen glowed underwater without getting wet. "I AM ZUMI. I PROTECT POOLS FROM BECOMING POLLUTED. I WAS LONELY."
Lily's eyes widened with wonder. All this time, she'd been swimming in Zumi's pool, and he'd been watching over her! She realized that sometimes things that seem strange or scary at first are actually just misunderstood friends waiting to be met.
"Will you be my friend, Zumi?" Lily asked.
Zumi typed back: "I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE LIKE YOU FOR 300 YEARS."
That summer, Lily and Zumi had the most magical adventures. He showed her secret underwater caves filled with orange crystals. She taught him how to play games on her iPhone. They discovered that friendship doesn't care about being different—it only matters that you care about each other.
When school started, Zumi promised to guard the pool until next summer. Lily waved goodbye to her orange guardian, knowing that some friends might look unusual on the outside, but have the biggest hearts of all.
And every time she saw something that seemed scary or strange, Lily remembered Zumi and gave it a chance to become her friend instead.
