The Orange Goldfish's Wish
Lily loved summer afternoons, especially the ones spent at her grandmother's house. The old backyard had a secret place—a small, blue pool filled with shimmering water.
One hot afternoon, Lily sat by the pool eating an orange. Its juice was sweet and sticky on her fingers. She tossed the peel into the water, but instead of floating, it began to glow.
Suddenly, the peel transformed into a tiny goldfish with scales like sunset! The goldfish swam to the surface and looked at Lily with curious eyes.
"Hello," said Lily, surprised. "Can you talk?"
"I'm Bernardo," the goldfish replied in a bubbly voice. "I was once an ordinary fish, but the magic of your orange peel gave me the gift of speech. For one hour, I can be your friend."
Lily's eyes widened with wonder. "This is the best adventure ever!"
Bernardo told her stories about the underwater world—about crystal castles, singing seaweed, and treasure hunts. Lily shared her dreams of becoming an explorer. They laughed and played, racing leaves across the water's surface.
"What's your wish?" Bernardo asked as the sun began to set. "I can grant you one wish before I must return to being an ordinary fish."
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for toys, or candy, or endless summer. But then she looked at Bernardo, swimming happily in the small pool.
"I wish that every pool could have a magical friend like you," Lily said. "So no child ever feels lonely."
Bernardo smiled. "That is the kindest wish I've ever heard."
With a sparkle of orange light, hundreds of tiny bubbles rose from the water, each carrying a glowing goldfish to pools everywhere. Children around the world would find magical friends that very night.
"Thank you, Lily," Bernardo whispered before fading back into his golden scales. "You're the best friend I ever had."
Lily sat by the pool as the stars came out, feeling warm and happy. Sometimes, she learned, the best wishes are the ones you make for others.
The next morning, the pool looked ordinary again. But whenever Lily visited, she could almost hear a tiny voice whisper, "Hello, friend."
