The Orange Goldfish's Secret
Lily knelt by the pond, her knees damp with morning grass. In her hands, she held the brightest thing she'd ever seen — an orange goldfish, shimmering like a tiny piece of sunset caught in a bowl.
"Hello there," she whispered, and the fish did something impossible. It whispered back.
"Hello, Lily. I've been waiting for you."
Lily almost dropped him. "You can talk?"
"My name is Finley," said the goldfish, his scales flashing orange in the sunlight. "And I need a friend. Are you brave?"
Lily nodded, her heart beating fast.
"Then hold tight!" Finley wriggled, and suddenly they weren't by the pond anymore. They were underwater, but Lily could breathe. Orange light filtered through the waves, and tiny glowing creatures danced around them like floating stars.
"Welcome to the Kingdom Below," Finley said proudly. "But oh no — look!"
The orange coral reefs were turning gray. Sad little fish floated listlessly. Even the seaweed looked droopy.
"What happened?" Lily asked.
"The Wonder Stone is gone," Finley explained. "It makes everything magical and bright. Without it, the kingdom fades."
Lily spotted something glinting in the distance — an orange stone caught in a tangle of old fishing nets. "Is that it?"
Finley's eyes widened. "The Wonder Stone! But look at those nets — they're guarded by the Grumpy Crab!"
A large crab clicked its claws menacingly nearby.
"I have an idea," Lily said. She reached into her pocket and pulled out something she'd found on the way to the pond — a shiny, smooth pebble. She tossed it far to the left. The Grumpy Crab scuttled after it.
"Quick!" Finley swam toward the stone. Lily followed, kicking her legs through the water. Together they pulled the orange Wonder Stone free.
Color exploded everywhere. The coral turned brilliant orange and pink. The fish began to dance. The seaweed waved happily.
"You did it!" Finley cheered. "Lily, will you be my friend forever? Come visit anytime?"
"Always," Lily promised, giving her orange friend a gentle poke on his slippery nose.
In a blink, she was back by the pond, knees on grass, holding an ordinary goldfish in her hands. Or was he ordinary? Finley winked at her, his orange scales flashing in the sunlight.
Lily smiled. Sometimes the best friends are the smallest ones, and the biggest adventures are just a pond away.
