The Orange Fish's Promise

Timmy was the fastest runner in his neighborhood. Every morning, he'd lace up his sneakers and go running along the beach path, feeling the wind in his hair and the sand between his toes. But Timmy had a secret—he was afraid of the water.

One sunny morning, something caught his eye. In a small tide pool, an orange fish was splashing about. Not just orange-colored—it was glowing like a tiny sunset!

"Hello!" said the fish. "I'm Coral. Aren't you going running today?"

Timmy jumped back. "You can talk?"

"Of course!" Coral flicked her orange tail. "I watch you every morning. You're so fast! I wish I could run like you. I'm afraid of swimming in the big ocean. What if there are scary sharks out there?"

Timmy sat by the tide pool. "I'm afraid of the water too. My mom says I need to learn to swim, but..."

"Maybe we can help each other," Coral suggested.

Every morning that week, while Timmy went running, he'd stop to visit Coral. He told her about the feel of sand beneath his feet, the rush of air when he sprinted. Coral described the beautiful underwater world—glowing jellyfish, rainbow coral, gentle sea turtles who sang ancient songs.

"You know," Timmy said on the fourth day, "my running teacher says courage isn't not being scared. It's being scared and doing it anyway."

Coral's orange scales shimmered. "That's beautiful."

That afternoon, Timmy waded into the shallow water, heart pounding. "Ready, Coral?"

The little fish swam beside him as he practiced kicking, floating, and finally, swimming! With Coral's encouragement, Timmy discovered that the water wasn't scary—it was like flying, but softer.

"Now it's your turn!" Timmy said the next morning. He carried Coral's tide pool water in a bucket to the ocean's edge. "I'll be right beside you."

Together, Timmy swam and Coral explored, both facing their fears. The ocean was indeed full of wonders—and no scary sharks, just curious dolphins who waved their fins in greeting.

From that day on, Timmy was known as the boy who could run faster than the wind AND swim like a fish. And Coral? She became the bravest fish in the reef, teaching other little fish about courage and friendship.

The best adventures, Timmy learned, are the ones where you help a friend discover their courage—and find your own along the way.
