The Orange Enigma
Maya pressed her back against the bleachers, heart hammering like a base runner stealing home. She'd never considered herself much of a baseball fan, but ever since Jordan moved to town, she'd started showing up at every practice just to watch him pitch. He was beautiful in that terrifying way popular boys are—confident, effortless, constantly surrounded by people who actually belonged.
Not like her. Maya was the girl who sat in the back of chemistry, the one people forgot was there. Which made her perfect spy material. She'd mastered the art of invisible observation, collecting intel like it was her job. Jordan's favorite song (that indie track he hummed under his breath), his secret habit (chewing his nails when nervous), the way his eyes crinkled when he laughed.
Her phone buzzed. Naomi: 'Any updates on Operation Jordan?'
Maya typed back: 'He's wearing orange Converse today. Same ones as last Tuesday.'
'YOU LITERALLY NOTICE EVERYTHING,' Naomi replied. 'Riddle me this, Maya the Sphinx: what does it mean?'
The sphinx comment landed weirdly. Maya had been reading about Egyptian mythology for English extra credit, something about riddles and secrets. But she didn't feel like some wise gatekeeper. She felt like her brother's goldfish, swimming in endless circles, watching everything from behind glass.
Jordan looked up then, and for three seconds, their eyes caught across the field. Maya's breath stopped. He noticed her. Actually noticed her.
'Hey,' he said, walking over. 'You're at every practice. You play?'
'Me?' Maya's voice squeaked. 'No. I just... I like watching.'
Jordan's grin was genuine, not performative. 'Cool. Mind if I sit? These bleachers get lonely.'
He sat. Beside her. Close enough that she could smell his laundry detergent—something citrusy and fresh.
'I'm Jordan,' he said, like she didn't already know.
'Maya.'
'Nice to officially meet, Maya.' He paused. 'You know, I've been wanting to talk to you. You seem... interesting. Quiet, but like you're always observing everything.'
Maya's heart did something complicated. 'Yeah. I guess.'
'Wanna get ice cream after this? There's this place—'
'Orange Dream?' The words slipped out before she could stop them.
Jordan's eyes went wide. 'How did you—'
Heat flooded Maya's cheeks. 'I might have noticed you eating their mint chip last week. Outside the mini mart.' Because she was a creep who stalked his socials and memorized his routines.
Instead of looking weirded out, Jordan laughed. 'Dude, that's actually kind of cool. Most people don't notice stuff like that.' He bumped her shoulder with his. 'So? Ice cream?'
Maya nodded, unable to trust her voice. As Jordan returned to the mound, she caught Naomi's eye from across the field. Her best friend gave her two thumbs-up.
Maybe goldfish weren't trapped. Maybe they were just waiting for someone to notice them swimming there all along.
