The Orange Disaster

Maya's hair was perfect—cascading waves she'd spent forty-five minutes curling. Her first date with Jake from AP English was finally happening. She'd planned everything: the cute café downtown, the perfect outfit, the casual-but-flirty opening lines.

Then came the orange incident.

She'd decided to look healthy and sophisticated by ordering the spinach and citrus salad. Because nothing says "I'm a mature sixteen-year-old" like eating leaves at a restaurant. Jake had ordered a burger like a normal human being.

"So," Jake said, leaning in. "I really liked your analysis of The Great Gatsby."

Maya smiled, ready to dazzle him with her literary insights. That's when a piece of spinach decided to stage a coup. It launched itself from her fork, did a perfect backflip through the air, and landed directly in her cleavage.

She froze. Should she flick it away? Pretend it didn't exist? Die on the spot?

"You got something..." Jake gestured vaguely at his own chest.

The whole situation had the precision of a lightning strike—catastrophic, blinding, and over in seconds. Maya's face burned hotter than her hair straightener on max setting.

"Thanks," she squeaked, fishing out the offending green leafy vegetable while pretending her soul wasn't leaving her body.

Then, because the universe wasn't done with her yet, she knocked her orange juice onto her white jeans. The bull—her older brother's nickname for her stubborn streak—had finally met its match: public humiliation.

Jake didn't laugh. Instead, he handed her a napkin. "Last week, I tripped over my own feet in the cafeteria and launched my tray onto the principal's shoes."

Maya looked up. "Really?"

"Covered his loafers in mashed potatoes and gravy. He still gives me this look in the hallway like he's planning revenge."

They started laughing. The genuine, can't-breathe kind that makes your stomach hurt. The date wasn't perfect, but somehow, this disaster became the best thing that could've happened.

Three years later, Jake still calls her "Spinach" when he wants to annoy her. And Maya still orders the spinach salad—just not on first dates anymore.
