The Orange Crystal Pond
Lily discovered the secret behind Old Man Willow's tree on a Tuesday that felt like magic was waiting to happen.
The pond there wasn't ordinary water. It sparkled with tiny orange crystals that floated like fireflies in the summer dusk. But lately, the crystals had stopped glowing. They sat dull and heavy at the bottom, and the forest animals—the rabbits, the birds, even the old badger who lived in the hollow—were getting sick.
Lily's grandmother called them her daily vitamins. 'These keep you strong,' she'd say, handing Lily the orange pills. But Lily hated them. They tasted like bitter medicine.
'What if the water needs something?' Lily wondered aloud, sitting by the pond with her friend Tomas. 'Like how grandma says I need my vitamins to stay healthy?'
Tomas, who was clever with nature, picked up a handful of the dull crystals. 'They're sleeping,' he said. 'Look closely.'
Lily looked. And deep inside each orange crystal, something flickered—tiny lights like dreams trying to wake up.
'They're not sleeping,' Lily realized suddenly. 'They're lonely.'
She took her orange from lunch—the one she'd saved because it was the perfect shade of sunset—and squeezed a drop of juice into the pond.
The crystals woke.
First one glowed, then another, then hundreds, until the entire pond shimmered like liquid sunset. The water began to bubble and dance, and out rose the most beautiful creature Lily had ever seen—a water sprite made entirely of light and tiny orange crystals.
'Thank you,' the sprite whispered, her voice like rain on a roof. 'The vitamins of the forest need friendship to shine. They'd forgotten because no one had visited in so long.'
Together, Lily and Tomas made a promise. Every day after school, they would come sit by the pond. They would bring stories and laughter and sometimes, just sometimes, a perfect orange from lunch.
And the forest animals? They grew strong again. The rabbits hopped higher, the birds sang louder, and the old badger started doing backflips that made everyone laugh.
The orange crystal pond became their secret garden of friendship, where even the smallest vitamins—when given love—could create the brightest magic.
